THE CHIPMONK AND THE SQUIRREL

Once there was a chipmunk named Freddy and he lived in the woods up North. The chipmunk had a neighbor named Bernie who was a squirrel. Fred noticed that Bernie liked to burry nuts in the ground to store for winter.

Freddy had since of humor. He also thought that he was a lot smarter than Bernie. After all Bernie was just a squirrel. So, one day Freddy decided to play a trick on his neighbor Bernie. Freddy watched Bernie pick up a nice big nut off of a rock and then run off a little ways and bury the nut in the ground beneath a large fern. Freddy decided to dig up the nut Bernie had just buried and take it back to the rock where Bernie had found it. Freddy thought that Bernie was so poor at thinking that Bernie would not realize he had picked up the nut before. Freddy wondered how many times Bernie would take the same nut and rebury it before Freddy realized that it was the same nut. Freddy carefully placed the nut in the exact spot where Bernie had found it.

After Freddy had taken the nut back to where Bernie had found it Freddy hid behind a small pile of sticks and waited for Bernie to come along. A few minutes later Bernie came along, pick the nut off of the stone and ran off to the large fern. There Bernie reburied the nut in the exact spot it had come from. Then, Bernie took off to find some more nuts to burry.

After Bernie was gone Freddy had a big laugh. Freddy then dug the nut back up and took it back to the rock where Bernie had originally found it. Freddy again placed the nut exactly on the rock just as it had been the first time Bernie took it. Freddy then, hid again behind a pile of sticks and waited for Bernie to come along. It was not long before Bernie came back to the rock and took the nut back to the spot he had buried it before. Bernie reburied the nut and was soon gone and out of site of Freddy. This time Freddy laughed and laughed and laughed. He could barely stop laughing. He thought that Bernie was really lacking intelligence since Bernie seemed to be doing the same thing over and over again. Bernie did not seem to realize that Freddy was digging up the nut and putting it in the same spot again and again.

Freddy decided he would have some more fun. Freddy dug up the nut again and again placed it on the rock where Bernie kept picking it up. Freddy then hid behind the pile of sticks and waited for Bernie to show up. Sure enough, Bernie came pouncing almost immediately out of the woods and took the nut back to the spot under the fern where he had been burring it. Freddy watched Bernie burry the nut again but, this time Freddy started to giggle and he could not control himself. He tried to hold back a full belly laugh but he could not. So Freddy came out from behind his sticks laughing uncontrollably at Bernie. “You are so silly” Freddy said to Bernie. “You keep taking the same nut from the same stone and burying it in the same spot over and over again. Don’t you realize I’ve been moving the nut on you and laughing when you take it back to burry it?”

Bernie started to laugh uncontrollably. “I know you were digging up my nut and replacing it on the stone. I’ve been reburying the nut and hiding to get a laugh at you while you keep digging it up and setting it back on the stone.”
