Once there was a chipmunk named Freddy and he lived in the woods up North. The chipmunk had a neighbor named Bernie who was a squirrel. Fred noticed that Bernie liked to burry nuts in the ground to store for winter.
Freddy had since of humor. He also thought that he was a lot smarter than Bernie. After all Bernie was just a squirrel. So, one day Freddy decided to play a trick on his neighbor Bernie. Freddy watched Bernie pick up a nice big nut off of a rock and then run off a little ways and bury the nut in the ground beneath a large fern. Freddy decided to dig up the nut Bernie had just buried and take it back to the rock where Bernie had found it. Freddy thought that Bernie was so poor at thinking that Bernie would not realize he had picked up the nut before. Freddy wondered how many times Bernie would take the same nut and rebury it before Freddy realized that it was the same nut. Freddy carefully placed the nut in the exact spot where Bernie had found it.
After Freddy had taken the nut back to where Bernie had found it Freddy hid behind a small pile of sticks and waited for Bernie to come along. A few minutes later Bernie came along, pick the nut off of the stone and ran off to the large fern. There Bernie reburied the nut in the exact spot it had come from. Then, Bernie took off to find some more nuts to burry.
After Bernie was gone Freddy had a big laugh. Freddy then dug the nut back up and took it back to the rock where Bernie had originally found it. Freddy again placed the nut exactly on the rock just as it had been the first time Bernie took it. Freddy then, hid again behind a pile of sticks and waited for Bernie to come along. It was not long before Bernie came back to the rock and took the nut back to the spot he had buried it before. Bernie reburied the nut and was soon gone and out of site of Freddy. This time Freddy laughed and laughed and laughed. He could barely stop laughing. He thought that Bernie was really lacking intelligence since Bernie seemed to be doing the same thing over and over again. Bernie did not seem to realize that Freddy was digging up the nut and putting it in the same spot again and again.
Freddy decided he would have some more fun. Freddy dug up the nut again and again placed it on the rock where Bernie kept picking it up. Freddy then hid behind the pile of sticks and waited for Bernie to show up. Sure enough, Bernie came pouncing almost immediately out of the woods and took the nut back to the spot under the fern where he had been burring it. Freddy watched Bernie burry the nut again but, this time Freddy started to giggle and he could not control himself. He tried to hold back a full belly laugh but he could not. So Freddy came out from behind his sticks laughing uncontrollably at Bernie. “You are so silly” Freddy said to Bernie. “You keep taking the same nut from the same stone and burying it in the same spot over and over again. Don’t you realize I’ve been moving the nut on you and laughing when you take it back to burry it?”
Bernie started to laugh uncontrollably. “I know you were digging up my nut and replacing it on the stone. I’ve been reburying the nut and hiding to get a laugh at you while you keep digging it up and setting it back on the stone.”

THE FABLE TREE
Far out in a sea of green,
There is a wisdom seldom seen,
Though it stands tall into the sky,
And sees all with it’s all Seeing Eye,
Centuries come and centuries go,
Old things die and new things grow,
Watching worlds come and go,
In the forest down below,
Generations of flesh and bark,
Live their lives from light until dark,
Watched from above the great green sea,
Remembered by the Fable Tree.
There is a wisdom seldom seen,
Though it stands tall into the sky,
And sees all with it’s all Seeing Eye,
Centuries come and centuries go,
Old things die and new things grow,
Watching worlds come and go,
In the forest down below,
Generations of flesh and bark,
Live their lives from light until dark,
Watched from above the great green sea,
Remembered by the Fable Tree.

THE GREEN SNAKES AND THE TADPOLE
In a small, shallow pond there lived a tadpole named Mike. Now Mike had several hundred brothers and sisters however, Mike’s brothers and sisters had all become frogs and had hopped away into the forest to find their own ponds where they could swim. This left Mike all alone in what seemed to be a much bigger pond than it had been when his brothers and sisters were still there.
One day, two green snakes came slithering into the pond. Mike was at first happy to see that he had some company but, the snakes began chasing after Mike and tried to eat him. Mike was very good at diving so he dove under the water and hid under some lily pads. After a while the snakes left but, the next day the two snakes were back and were again chasing poor Mike all around the pond. Mike screamed “Oh great green snakes please don’t eat me I haven’t even had a chance to grow up and become a frog yet.” But, Mike’s pleas were to no avail and the snakes kept chasing after him. Mike again hid under some lily pads until the snakes left the pond. This went on for about a week then; the green grass snakes went away for the rest of the summer to stay with an aunt and uncle who lived under a nice big rock at the edge of a beautiful lake.
When the summer came to an end the two green snakes returned home. They decided to go down to the little lily pond to see if they could make a snack of that tadpole they had left behind several weeks earlier. The two snakes slithered down to the pond and into the water. They looked all over for the tadpole. They even discovered his secret hiding spot under the lily pads. Finally, as the two green snakes were getting ready to give up looking for the tadpole, they noticed two really strange looking little islands in the middle of the pond. The snakes were curious about the islands because they had never seen them there before so, they swan over to investigate the islands. But, just as the snakes were almost on top of the islands a huge bullfrog surfaced. It seems the islands were actually the bull frog’s eyes and he had been waiting for the snakes to swim over to him.
“Remember me my fine green fellows,” the bull frog said to the snakes. “A few weeks ago I was just a little tadpole swimming around in this lily pond when you guys showed up and tried to eat me. You even came back several times looking for me and you terrified me like you would not believe. You knew then you could get away with terrifying me because at the time I was just a little unimportant tadpole. As you can see now, since you’ve been gone I’ve grown up quite a bit and everyone looks up to me because I have become so big and powerful. And, do you know what food I now like best?” The two snakes just lay in the water too shocked and afraid to move in front of the large bull frog.
The bull frog had a large grin on his face as he said, “My favorite food are green snakes”. With that the bull frog licked his lips and then proceeded to slurp each green snake down whole like a long piece of spaghetti. The bull frog was quite happy that he had devoured those awful snakes who had tormented him so much when he was just a little tad pole.

THE TURTLE AND THE ONION
One day a large turtle was crawling along in the forest crushing all the plants in his path. Suddenly, out of no where, there came a high pitched shout, “Stop, Stop, Oh please stop oh great and mighty turtle”.
The turtle stopped abruptly and asked “Who is telling me, the great turtle of the forest to stop?”
“It’s me,” a little voice squeaked. I am the onion plant that is right in front of you and I don’t want to be crushed when you go over me.”
“Well little onion plant,” said the turtle, “I do not know why I should spare you but, I guess I can step aside and change my course slightly so I do not crush you.”
The little onion plant was so happy that he cried out with joy “Oh thank you, thank you or great and wonderful turtle. And for sparing my life, I will always be here to save you from your enemies>“
The turtle smirked a bit and said, “It‘s all well and good that you think you can save me from my enemies but, here in this forest no animal can get to me through my hard, protective shell. In fact, the only animals that can tear apart my shell and get to me are the bears and they are trapped on the other side of the river. They can never get across to this side because the current is just too fast.” With that, the large turtle continued on his way leaving the little onion plant unharmed.
A few weeks later there was a terrible storm. A torrent of water rushed down the river and away the dirt from under the roots of a giant tree. With no dirt left to anchor the roots, the mighty tree fell all the way across the river leaving a large solid bridge for the animals to cross over to the other side. There was one particular bear that noticed the new bridge. This bear had a fondness for turtle meat. He liked turtle meat so much that he had eaten every single turtle on his side of the river. The bear decided that he might find a turtle or two on the other side so he quickly made his way across the tree bridge.
Once on the other side of the bridge, the bear had no problem finding the large turtle that thought he was safe on his side of the river. When the turtle saw the bear coming the turtle quickly scurried away into the forest with the bear in close pursuit. It wasn’t long before the turtle came across the little onion he had spared a few weeks earlier. “Why are you in such a hurry?” the little onion asked the turtle.
“A tree fell across the river and now there is a bear on this side and he is hunting me. I don’t know what to do,” answered the turtle.
“Nibble a little bit off the top of my stem,” the onion said insistently.
“But I’m not hungry,” protested the turtle, “and besides, I’ve got to start running again or the bear is going to eat me.”
“If you want to quit running and get rid of the bear, nibble a little bit off the end of my green shoot. It will hurt but, I can always grow back another shoot but, I can’t grow back my friend.”
The turtle did as he was told. The stem tasted kind of hot and when the bear was right on top of the turtle and about to pounce, the turtle opened up his mouth and let the smell of onion breath hit the bear right in the face. The bear jumped back away from the turtle. “You stink. I couldn’t eat anything that smells as bad as you do,” the bear said in disgust as he walked away.
After that the turtle realized that he had a very good friend in the little green onion. Meanwhile, the bear returned back to his side of the river and told all the other bears there that the turtles on the other smelled so bad that they could not be eaten. After that, no bear ever ventured over to the other side of the river.
